Motorola Moto Razr 2022 with SD8+ Gen 1 Announced
Less than 24 hours after Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Motorola introduced the Moto Razr 2022, its own clamshell foldable phone. The previous Z Flips and Razrs also utilized the clamshell design, which allows the phone to be folded in half and stored in a pocket, but the similarities between these two new iterations of the popular folding phone form factor are even more striking. The Razr 2022 and two other high-end Motorola smartphones (including the folding mobile, which was the event’s main draw) were recently released in China. We’re crossing our fingers that the Razr 2022 will be released in other regions soon, as it seems likely that Motorola will release its flagship smartphone in other markets in the near future.
The Moto has a similar 6.7-inch screen to the Samsung, complete with a punch-hole camera notch and a powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset (though in the Razr this screen has a higher refresh rate at 144Hz). The Motorola Razr is superior not only because of its higher refresh rate but also because of its larger outer screen (when the device is closed) at 2.7 inches, its higher-resolution main camera at 50MP (joined by a 13MP ultra-wide snapper), its higher-resolution selfie camera at 32MP, and its, in our opinion at least, more attractive design. The phone runs the same version of Android as the Flip, but Motorola has added its own MyUI skin on top in place of Samsung’s One UI (though if it launches outside of China, it may ship with stock Android).
A price in China for the Moto Razr 2022 was provided, and it appears to be less than the $999.99/£999/AU $1,499 asking price of the Flip. However, conversions from Chinese prices can often be very rough, with phones often seeming cheaper in China than they do in other countries, so take this with a large grain of salt for the time being. The Razr 2020, for example, came with a mid-range chipset and a really chunky chin, despite the high price you pay for such a phone. Nonetheless, the Razr 2020 appears to have altered the status quo. It’s equipped with a high-end processor, has a sleeker exterior design, better rear cameras, and a larger display. At last, Moto has released a well-executed foldable.
