Morgan Freeman narrates a new promotional video for Dave Chapelle’s special ‘The Closer’
Chappelle’s sixth and final Netflix comedy special premieres on the streaming service Monday night.
Since signing a lucrative deal with Netflix in 2016, Chappelle has found success working with the streaming giant on must-see stand-up comedy special events. Chappelle received critical acclaim and three Emmy nominations for his previous specials The Age Of Spin, Deep In The Heart Of Texas, Equanimity, The Bird Revelation, and Sticks & Stones.
Now, with his latest special, The Closer, Chappelle will bring his “body of work” to a close.
In the trailer for The Closer, Chappelle is seen driving down the highway, accompanied by acclaimed actor and frequent narrator Morgan Freeman, who narrates his journey. At the beginning of the video, Freeman declares emphatically, “This is Dave. He tells jokes for a living. Driving down these country roads is a lot like a meditation…he is deep in thought, back in the trance, five specials in this many years, how do you close a body of work that profound?”
Freeman continues to discuss the “enormity of the pressure” of wrapping up a series of comedy specials before Chappelle slams on his breaks and yells, “Will you shut the f— up Morgan Freeman?!” The camera then pans out to reveal that Freeman is narrating from inside Chappelle’s car. After apologising, Chappelle tells Freeman, “it’s alright,” as they drive down the open road.
According to an official press release obtained by The West News, Chappelle will also reunite with Emmy-winning director Stan Lathan, who directed all six of Chappelle’s Netflix specials.
Chappelle was awarded the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019. Chappelle opened up about the art of comedy and the honesty it requires when done correctly in his speech at the time.
There’s something so true about this genre, when done correctly, that I will fight anybody that gets in a true practitioner of this art form’s way because I know you’re wrong,” Chappelle said. ““This is the truth and you are obstructing it. I’m not talking about the content, I’m talking about the art form.”
The Closer will be available on Netflix worldwide on October 5.
