Microsoft is rumoured to be working on a new Killer Instinct game

The Killer Instinct community has remained one of the most outspoken in the FGC in their desire to see another entry in the series, and their wish may be granted in the near future.

According to a fresh rumour, a completely new Killer Instinct title is now under active development at Microsoft.

Shpeshal Nick of the XboxEra podcast, who claims to have intimate information on the project’s existence, provided the news.

“What I’ve been told is that yes, Killer Instinct is in active development,” said Nick on the most recent podcast. “It’s not just ‘coming back.’ It’s in active development at the moment.”

He claims he first heard rumours about KI’s death last year, but he didn’t want to say anything since he needed more solid confirmation before putting the name out there in public.

Nick doesn’t know who is producing the claimed fighting game and is actively trying to find out, but he’s very sure it’s not Iron Galaxy, which took over development when Double Helix was acquired by Amazon.

“For anyone asking me, I don’t know the studio,” said Nick. “I haven’t been told. I’m legitimately trying to find out the studio because I’m pretty I’m pretty sure it’s not Iron Galaxy.”

Adam ‘Keits’ Heart revealed at the start of 2020 that Iron Galaxy is hard at work on a new project, but that it is not KI.

In June of this year, Phil Spencer, the president of the Xbox division, was specifically asked about a new Killer Instinct, and he effectively stated that Microsoft would like to launch a new entry, but they needed to find the right partner first.

“It is about finding the right team and the right opportunity, but it is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we’re not doing more with KI, because we love the franchise and the community response,” said Spencer.

After being inactive for 17 years, Killer Instinct was resurrected as a launch title for the Xbox One in 2013, and it received three seasons of DLC through 2016.

Without more definite evidence, it’s crucial to remember that this is still only a rumour at this moment, so take KI chatter with a grain of salt until more information is potentially given.
