Manchester United Anthony Elanga was allegedly subjected to racist abuse

Anthony Elanga was allegedly subjected to racial comments while playing for Sweden’s Under-21 team against Italy on Tuesday night, according to the Swedish FA. After the match in Monza, the Manchester United prodigy claimed that an Italian Under-21 player made a racial remark to him.

Swedish FA chefs acknowledged that a report was made to both referees and match delegates and that they are now waiting for a reaction. It’s unclear when the incident occurred, but at full-time, both teams were involved in a brawl that started on the field and concluded in the tunnel.

Elanga was visibly upset and was dragged away by the referee while receiving assistance from his manager. The event in Italy occurs as FIFA condemns the riots that occurred during England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary, as well as the violent incidents that occurred during Albania’s match against Poland in the same group.

The Swedish Football Association has released a statement confirming that Elanga formalized his grievances following the ugly scenes.

“In connection with the U21 national team’s European Championship qualifier against Italy in Monza on Tuesday, Anthony Elanga has stated after the match that he has been subjected to a racist comment from an opponent in the Italian U21 national team,” the statement reads.

Claes Eriksson, the coach of Sweden’s U21s, has vowed that the whole squad will “stand behind” Elanga as an investigation into the alleged abuse continues.

“We have told our version of what happened and have submitted a verbal report to both the referees and the match delegates,” Eriksson said post-match.

“Now we are waiting for feedback through the match report and the referee report. Once that has arrived, we will decide how to proceed. Security manager Martin Fredman has also been informed of what has happened.

“No one should have to be exposed to racism, it is completely unacceptable. We all stand behind and support Anthony in this.”

At Wembley Stadium, a man was arrested on suspicion of racial abuse, allegedly directed at a steward, according to the Metropolitan Police.

“Shortly after the start of tonight’s match at Wembley, police entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offense following statements made towards a steward,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

“As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators. Order was quickly restored and there have been no further incidents at this stage.”

“We are aware of an incident in the away section during tonight’s FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifier at Wembley Stadium the Football Association said.

“We will be investigating and will report the incident to FIFA.”

“FIFA is now assessing reports of last night’s FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in order to decide the most suitable measures,” the sport’s global governing body said in a statement.

“FIFA strongly condemns the incidents at England v Hungary and Albania v Poland and would like to state that its position remains firm and resolute in rejecting any form of violence as well as any form of discrimination or abuse. FIFA has a very clear zero-tolerance stance against such abhorrent behavior in football.”

Racist abuse was directed at England players during their 4-0 win over Hungary in the equivalent match last month.

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland scored twice beat Mainz 3-1 and go top of the Bundesliga table

On his return from injury, Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland scored twice to help his club defeat Mainz 3-1 and move to the top of the Bundesliga table. The Norwegian forward, who had been out since late September, scored a penalty kick in the 54th minute after a lengthy VAR review of a handball and then scored twice in second-half stoppage time.

“It is clear he had been missing in our team,” said Dortmund captain Marco Reus. “It is important that he plays because he constantly keeps two or three players occupied. To score two goals on his comeback is top. That is why we signed him.”

The hosts were off to a flying start, with captain Marco Reus thumping in a deflected cutback in the third minute to give them the lead. It was Reus’ 14th goal against Mainz in 20 outings, the highest against any Bundesliga team.

Dortmund possessed three-quarters of possession in a tense first half but had to wait nearly the entire half for another chance, which came in stoppage time when a Jude Bellingham shot was cleared off the line.

Dortmund didn’t have to wait long to extend their lead after dominating the first half and being on the front foot from the start. Following a lengthy VAR review for handball against Silvan Widmer, Haaland won and converted a penalty shortly after Aaron Martin diverted a Meunier cross just wide. Karim Onisiwo threatened retaliation, but after avoiding the offside trap, he couldn’t make his tough lobbed attempt on goal.

As the game progressed, Mats Hummels deflected a Reus corner against the far post, before Jean-Paul Boetius pushed Gregor Kobel into a strong reaction save with a long-range drive. Following a miscued Kobel clearance, Mainz substitute Jonathan Burkardt reduced the areas, but Haaland tucked away a pass from Jude Bellingham to seal the deal in extended time with his 49th Bundesliga goal in as many games.

Premier League: Chelsea returned to the top of the table after a 1-0 victory over Brentford

Premier League: Chelsea returned to the top of the table after a 1-0 victory over Brentford

It wasn’t an exaggeration to call it a siege. Chelsea had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Ben Chilwell’s magnificent goal, but it was Brentford who posed all the questions – with growing urgency – as the frenetic game neared its conclusion.

How did Thomas Frank’s team fail to get an equalizer on his third anniversary as manager of the club? They deserved one without a doubt. The solution lay somewhere between terrible luck, poor finishing, and the brilliance of Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who refused to be beaten.

When Ivan Toney was denied by Mendy in 73 minutes, it sparked the start of a slow-burning contest. Brentford pressed forward, stuffing numbers into Chelsea’s box and putting all they had at them. The visitors were out of breath. “The last 20 minutes were pretty much torture on earth,” Chilwell added.

Bryan Mbeumo dragged a shot against the post like he had done in the first half, after being played in by Marcus Forss, who made a difference. It was then over to Mendy as Chelsea panicked, their vaunted defensive structure in shambles, with Thomas Tuchel admitting that it appeared as if Brentford had an extra player.

He made a one-on-one save to deny another substitution, Saman Ghoddos, before Brentford came near in the second half, with Christian Nrgaard pushing a shot towards goal only to be cleared off the line by Trevoh Chalobah.

The best was yet to come from Mendy. When Pontus Jansson threatened, he sprinted off his line to make himself big, the shot slamming him in the face and soaring away, and at the end, when the excellent Nrgaard finessed an acrobatic effort, Mendy flung up a hand to tip the game over.

The home crowd chanted, “We’re going to score in a minute.” It was engrossing viewing, demonstrating Brentford’s determination and belief. Chelsea had only conceded three goals in the Premier League this season, and they had created few chances in many of their games. This is not the case.

Brentford, on the other hand, we’re unable to score, failing to follow up their home triumph over Arsenal and the high-intensity draw with Liverpool with a memorable outcome. Chelsea was put through a lot, but thanks to Mendy, they were able to pull through.

Romelu Lukaku failed to make an impression in the game, touching the ball only 18 times before being replaced on 77 minutes, while Timo Werner seemed as if he could have played all night and not scored. Both of them were too isolated, especially as Chelsea became increasingly frantic to safeguard what they had as the game progressed.

Chelsea, on the other hand, wiggled their way to the desired outcome, leapfrogging Liverpool and returning to the top of the standings. It had a streaky appearance. It was unattractive. It made the points taste a little sweeter.

Frank was ecstatic. He needed to be. Brentford had limited the European champions to five shots, only one of which was on target, he said. He mentioned the five “100% opportunities” that went unfulfilled near the end. How had his team outperformed opponents who boasted five Ballon d’Or nominations? “It’s insane,” Frank added. But it didn’t take away the annoyance.

“There should only be one winner in the game and that is us,” Frank said. “It’s so painful. It burns in your body. Mendy was absolutely world-class. He has been crazy good for Chelsea.”

Chelsea had the majority of the opening 70 minutes under control, but without setting a strong tone. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who Tuchel employed in front of a defensive three that included Malang Sarr, who was making his league debut, offered the most intriguing aspects of their performance. He was given credit for his efforts.

Loftus-Cheek possesses physicality, but it’s his finesse that catches the eye: his dashes past opponents, his speed on his feet, especially when surrounded by guys. He had moments when he was nearly hypnotic.

If Mbeumo’s shot on 22 minutes had gone in instead of hitting the post, the game might have ended differently. Toney had come close with a header just moments before. When Nrgaard returned to Mbeumo, Ethan Pinnock rose to meet a Sergi Canós cross, and the chance was on. He got really close, but not quite close enough.

From that point until halftime, Chelsea was a shaky attacking force. Lukaku was ruled offside after turning home a Werner cross; Mateo Kovacic’s deflected free-kick floated over, and Werner had a couple of flashes when he might have done better. After a Lukaku lay-off, he sidefooted high and then attempted to pass to his strike partner rather than fire when well-placed. The execution was not up to par.

When César Azpilicueta crossed the ball, Lukaku tussled with Jansson, and Chilwell cut across a first-time shot, the ball flew past David Raya. Brentford’s shouts would be heard after that.
