Lashana Lynch has been cast as Rita Marley in an untitled Bob Marley biopic
Actress Lashana Lynch, who recently starred in Matilda and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, has been chosen to play Bob Marley’s wife, Rita, in an as-yet-untitled biopic about the reggae artist. As for King Richard, filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green will serve as the project’s executive producer. Paramount Pictures is reportedly developing the movie. The currently untitled Bob Marley-centered movie was first revealed in March 2021, along with the hiring of director David Gordon Green. At the time, it was said that the surviving members of the Marley family, including David “Ziggy” Marley, Cedella Marley, and the real Rita Marley, were very involved in making the movie as executive producers for Bob Marley’s record label, Tuff Gong.
The movie would follow Marley from his early years in Nine Mile, Jamaica, to his entry into the music industry with the Wailers (where he would meet his future wife, Rita), and from 1972 until his untimely death from cancer in 1981. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who will play Bob himself, was initially cast in February 2022 after a casting process that took “almost a year,” according to Lashana Lynch and the film’s showrunners, who claim that the Marley family’s involvement with the movie includes an understandably thorough evaluation process when it comes to casting their on-screen counterparts. According to Deadline, Lynch was put through several tests to determine her compatibility with Ben-Adir and the Marley family, who approved her for the role of Rita Marley. The people in charge of the movie were looking for someone from Jamaica, and Lynch’s casting as Rita, which was just made public today, seems to have been just as thorough.
The part of Rosaline Capulet in Still Star-Crossed (2017) marked Lashana Lynch’s breakthrough performance. In Captain Marvel, she made her MCU debut as Carol Danvers’ best friend, Maria Rambeau (2019). Lynch also portrayed Nomi, the new 007 and James Bond’s replacement, in the most recent Bond movie, No Time to Die (2021). She later portrayed Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (2022), as well as the sympathetic Miss Honey in Matilda (2022), in which she co-starred with Emma Thompson. Lynch will also appear with Viola Davis in The Woman King and will play Agaat Lourier in The Outside Room. Rita Marley will be played by Lashana Lynch in the untitled Bob Marley movie, which was written by Zach Baylin, Frank E. Flowers, and Terence Winter. Rita, Ziggy, and Cedella Marley will also act as executive producers for Tuff Gong, along with Robert Teitel.
