Katy Perry Called Out For Her Dual Standards on Pro-Choice Tweet
Following her tweets expressing dismay over the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Katy Perry was called out for endorsing Rick Caruso, who has in the past financed candidates who are opposed to abortion rights.
When the 37-year-old singer tweeted on the Fourth of July that “women in the US have fewer rights than an actual sparkler,” many pointed out that she had just endorsed a billionaire who had previously opposed abortion “in most cases” to replace Eric Garcetti as mayor of Los Angeles.
The Grammy nominee was labelled a “hypocrite” and told to “do a little more research before supporting” a “anti-abortionist” when she tweeted her support for reproductive freedom.
A another person questioned, “But you endorsed Rick Caruso, who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican and anti-abortion candidates???”
Another advised others to consider this as a ‘reminder’ that ‘celebrity girl bosses like Katy Perry & Gwyneth Paltrow who are now talking about reproductive rights endorsed Rick Caruso for mayor’ despite his donations to ‘pro-life charities and Republican candidates including Mitch McConnell.’
Others pulled up a tweet posted by Perry, an outspoken Democrat that campaigned for Hillary Clinton in 2016, from June that read: ‘RICK CARUSO FTW [for the win].’
‘Did you mean to time this up to be exactly one month after this tweet when you back an anti-abortion candidate,’ one Twitter user commented.
There were no shortages of tweets wondering ‘how long it will take’ her ‘to come around’ and ‘endorse Karen Bass.’
Others pointed out that Caruso, who is running as a Democrat, ‘advocates for pulling additional rights away from women.’
