Kaia Gerber’s Nepotism Comments on Hollywood Have Drawn Criticism
Kaia Gerber says that in the entertainment industry, nepotism isn’t a major concern.
The 21-year-old model, who is the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, spoke to Elle about the advantages of having famous parents, which she confessed were useful as a model but not so much as an actor, as the internet continues to obsess over the “nepo baby” controversy.
Gerber said, “I won’t deny the privilege that I have,” elaborating on how her mother’s prominence in the business world has provided her with access to “great advice” and introductions to influential individuals.
She went on to say, “That alone I feel very fortunate for,” adding that she remembered her mother telling the family joke, “always joked, ‘If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you.’”
Fans were especially offended by Gerber’s remarks on her acting career, in which she seemed to imply that her prominent roles in high-profile films like Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story and the Oscar-nominated Babylon were the result of her own efforts.
“With acting, it’s so different. No artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone’s kid. That just isn’t how art is made, and what I’m interested in is art,” in Hollywood, Gerber said, “if it actually was what people make it out to be, we’d see even more of it.”
Author Art Tavana joked, “‘Someone’s kid’ is a good way to phrase ‘a rich and prominent Hollywood power player’s kid,'” while a reader called Gerber a hypocrite, asking, “so ryan murphy really wanted the characters he wrote to have an unseasoned performance like hers, is that was she saying?”
