Jeffrey Donovan Has Been Cast in the Lead Role of ‘Law & Order’ Revival

‘Law & Order’ will return for its 21st season.

Law & Order is returning to television after an eleven-year hiatus, with Jeffrey Donovan in the lead role. According to Variety, Donovan will play an NYPD detective, but other details about his character are being kept under wraps. Law & Order was renewed for a 21st season was annouced in September. The popular series has spawned iconic spin-off series, some of which have lasted longer than the original run, such as Law & Order SVU, which has had 23 seasons to date.

The original series featured iconic performances by actors such as Jerry Orbach, Jesse L. Martin, Sam Waterston, and S. Epatha Merkerson, and the show’s cancellation disappointed many fans. It’s exciting that it’s being brought back now, but it’ll still have a Lennie Briscoe-sized hole in it.

Following the success of his show Burn Notice, in which he starred alongside Bruce Campbell, Gabrielle Anwar, Coby Bell, and others, Donovan went on to work on films such as Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, as well as playing John F. Kennedy in the 2016 film LBJ. He also played Dodd Gerhardt in Fargo’s second season. But he’s made a name for himself on Burn Notice as Michael Westen, a spy and former US Army soldier serving in special operations who is a top CIA operative.

With the addition of Law & Order, NBC will now have three different shows from the franchise airing at the same time. Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order.  Law & Order: Organized Crime is the most recent addition to the franchise, and it reintroduced fan favourite Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni.

Law & Order will be a welcome return to form for both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise. After 20 seasons of success, it will be interesting to see how the show adapts to a more modern lens because, despite the fact that the show ended in 2010, the way its spin-off series have adapted will make for an interesting return to the world and these characters we’ve come to know and love. Especially with Donovan at the helm.
