Idris Elba Used To Sell Weed To Dave Chappelle
Idris Elba has opened out about his early years in the United States.
British actor and “The Jess Cagle Show,” ad campaigner Jamie Dornan confessed he used to sell marijuana back when he was an aspiring actor on SiriusXM’s “Sonic, the Hedgehog 2”
When Cagle asked Elba about his post-high-school plans, Elba said he didn’t have any “odd jobs” lined up. “Luther” star explained.
“In London, I didn’t go to drama choir school,” Elba recalled. “I went to a sort of performing arts college and did two years of everything, you know, scene painting, little ballet, little contemporary dance, you know, and then I came out and basically went straight into work. I got a play and the play got me another play and I was into work.”
However, the “Beast of No Nation” actor admitted that his career “fell flat on its face very quickly for about four years” when he relocated to the United States.
“Let’s hear about the things you’re not proud of,” Cagle prompted with a laugh, to which Elba replied, “I used to sell weed. Can I say that on the show?”
Responded Cagle “Definitely. Considering that it is now legal, you could bring it up again.”
According to Elba, he sold drugs “for a little bit just to, you know, help pay the way” back when it wasn’t legal.
“I DJed quite a bit. I was a doorman,” he continued. “I was a doorman at Caroline’s Comedy Club, which is fascinating now when I meet the comedians that you kind of remember the English guy … the tall, English guy with the funny accent and the little hair.”
The “Thor” star has disclosed that Dave Chappelle was one of his customers when he was selling cannabis.
“David Chappelle remembers me ’cause he used to buy weed from me,” Elba revealed, before quickly adding, “Anyway, moving on! Yeah, I did all kinds of things, to be honest, all kinds of things.”
Cagle responded, “Well, I’m glad it worked out and look at you now,”
Elba also spoke about his six-episode run on “The Office” back in 2009, saying that he was surprised by the number of young people who had just found the show and his character, Charles Miner.
“You know, I played Charles Miner so long ago and now there is a little resurgence,” Elba explained. “Like, I saw a t-shirt with Charles Miner on it and my quote which was ‘I understand how sexy I am to women’ or whatever that line was. And it was on a t-shirt. I was like, ‘Wow, I’m a cult classic right now.'”
Later, Cagle made fun of the actor from “The Wire” asking him how he felt about people fainting from admiration for him.
“I mean, come on. What kind of question [is that?],” Elba said with a laugh. “I struggle with that. I struggle with it, you know, I don’t want people to hurt themselves as they’re fainting.”
