“Hercules’ – Guy Ritchie to Director Disney’s Live-Action Film”
The director of Disney’s upcoming live-action Hercules remake is a familiar face.
According to Variety, Guy Ritchie, who directed Disney’s Aladdin remake in 2019, will direct the upcoming project. Ritchie recently completed an action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and previously directed the upcoming Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre.
Hercules: Synopsis
The original film, starring Tate Donovan (Rocketman) as Hercules, was a musical retelling of the iconic Hercules legend in which Hades strips the son of Zeus of his immortality in order for him to conquer Mount Olympus in 18 years. His plans do not go as planned, as Hercules is left with his superhuman strength intact, and the hero embarks on a journey to protect his home and humanity.

Aside from Ritchie, Disney has hired Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to write a first draught for the film, which is promising given Callaham’s experience with action films. The directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo, have signed on to produce the upcoming remake under their AGBO banner.
The animated film is notable for its many years of development and constant retooling, with 18 credited writers contributing to the final product and Ron Clements and Jon Muker directing. Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), James Woods (Videodrome), and Susan Egan also appeared in the original film (Steven Universe).
