GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X: Release date, Platforms, News, and Rumors
GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X will deliver an ‘expanded and updated version of the enormously popular Grand Theft Auto 5 to the latest generation of consoles when it launches later this month. GTA 5 was first launched for Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2009, however, this new edition of the game, as well as its online counterpart, GTA Online, aims to take advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s capability.
What will be possible with the most powerful consoles on the market? Players may expect additional graphics modes (three in total), HDR choices, ray-tracing, faster load times, 3D audio, and more, according to Rockstar. It’s unclear whether these improvements will be enough to entice gamers, but those who do make the switch from Xbox One and PS4 will be able to transfer their previous saves so they don’t have to start from over.
You might be asking why Rockstar is even bothering with GTA 6 now that work has finally been verified as “far underway.” Rockstar’s GTA 5 and GTA Online are still highly profitable, so it’s not surprising that the company would wish to extend that success to a third console generation if it had the ability to do so. Furthermore, while GTA 6 is undoubtedly in development, we have no idea when it will be released, so this enlarged and enhanced edition of GTA 5 may be the only new-gen GTA adventure we have had for some time.

GTA 5 will be released for the PS5, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S on March 15, 2022, with GTA Online arriving as a distinct standalone version for the consoles. GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S was supposed to be released on November 11, 2021, but Rockstar Games stated in September 2021 that the improved edition of the game will be postponed until March 2022. The revised release date was confirmed in February 2022, along with the announcement of GTA 6.
In all of this, PlayStation owners have a big advantage. If you play GTA Online on PS4, you’ll receive GTA$1 million every month until the PS5 version of GTA is released. When GTA Online’s standalone edition launches on PS5 in March 2022, owners of the system will have three months – until June 2022 – to claim the game for free. Owners of the Xbox Series X/S will have to pay to play the new version of GTA Online when it launches, though no price has been announced yet.
GTA 5 and GTA Online will be available digitally on March 15 through the PS5 console store and the Microsoft store, with pre-purchase and pre-load starting on March 8. For those who prefer physical games, Rockstar has stated that they will be released in April, with more information to follow.

“PS4 and Xbox One users will be able to migrate both their GTAV Story Mode progress and their current GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, or across console platforms, with a one-time migration for each,” according to Rockstar.
When it comes to Story Mode, gamers can start transferring progress “simply uploading a save to the Rockstar Games Social Club,” according to Rockstar. It’s as simple as launching GTA V on your existing console account, heading to the Game tab of the Pause menu, and selecting the Upload Save Game option from there. “You can only save one game save per platform at a time,” Rockstar says, “and saves will be available to download for 90 days.”
On March 15, players will be able to transfer their GTA Online characters and progression using the Rockstar Games Social Club, with Rockstar confirming that “migration includes any Characters, GTA$, Progression, Stats, Vehicles, Properties, Weapons, Clothing, and Player-Created Jobs,” with the caveat that “Players will only be able to transfer their purchased GTA$ when migrating from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.”
