Grrrls lyrics changed by Lizzo after backlash for derogatory language
It has been pointed out to Lizzo that she used an ableist slur in her new song “Grrrls.” The song, which she released on Friday, will be featured on her next album, Special.
Despite the song’s apparent intention to be an optimistic, powerful anthem, the opening verse’s usage of the term “sp–z” drew the ire of several fans and disability advocacy groups.

Taking the criticism to heart, Lizzo admitted by using the term “harmful” in an Instagram post published on Monday.
“Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language,” she posted. “As a fat black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I overstand the power words can have (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally.)
“I’m proud to say there’s a new version of ‘Grrrls’ with a lyric change,” she continued. “This is the result of me listening and taking action. As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”
Instead of the slang phrase at the end of those lines, she sings, “Hold my bag, bitch/Hold my bag/Do you see this shit?/Hold me back,” in the new version’s opening lyrics.

Lizzo’s recent dance competition series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls and Special’s debut hit, “About Damn Time,” preceded the release of the new track by Special. On Saturday Night Live, the singer premiered the album’s title tune.
The HBO Max documentary on Lizzo’s life will air in the autumn, according to Lizzo’s most recent announcement. July 15 is the release date for Lizzo’s expected follow-up to Cuz I Love You, Special.
