Floyd Mayweather is ranked sixth in terms of net worth, but Conor McGregor falls short
Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao were ranked in the top 20, and Oscar De La Hoya was ranked in the top 25.
Floyd Mayweather was ranked sixth on a list of the wealthiest athletes in history, with Michael Jordan topping the list.
When adjusted for inflation, the retired boxer, who retired with a perfect 50-0 record, earned $1.2 billion during his career.
That is considerably less than Jordan’s $2.62 billion earned during his trophy-laden career with the Chicago Bulls.
Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus are the golfers who come in after Jordan, with Cristiano Ronaldo rounding out the top five in a list compiled by sports business website Sportico.
Mayweather is the only combat athlete in the top ten, with Mike Tyson ($775 million) coming in 16th and Manny Pacquiao ($630 million) coming in 18th.
The other boxer in the top 25 is Oscar De La Hoya, who has earned $580 million during his illustrious ring career.
Conor McGregor, the former two-weight UFC champion, does not make the list despite being involved in the second-richest fight of all time in 2017, when he earned $100 million for taking on Floyd Mayweather.
Golfers have the longest shelf life of any pro athlete, according to sports marketing expert Bob Dorfman, who explained their prominence on the list to Sportico: “With competitive careers that can span 30 years or more, golfers have the longest shelf life of any pro athlete.”
“Combine that with their global appeal across a broad and high-end fan demographic, and it’s no wonder so many rank high among the all-time earners in sports.”
McGregor, as well as tennis star Rafael Nadal and NFL legend Tom Brady, would rank in the top 25 if earnings were not adjusted for inflation, according to Sportico.
The website claims to have conducted extensive research and to have included in their final figures salaries, prize money, purses, bonuses, endorsements, licencing, royalties, memorabilia, book deals, appearances, and golf course design.
