First Kill has been canceled by Netflix after one season
First Kill, an adolescent drama on Netflix, has been canceled after just one season. Which aired in the second week of June, according to insiders, wasn’t a complete flop with Netflix customers, but it didn’t obtain the numbers it required to secure a second run. That is in spite of its first several weeks’ viewing numbers being quite acceptable. With 30.3 million hours seen in its first three days and 48.8 million in its first full week, the program ranked third behind Peaky Blinders and Stranger Things in terms of viewership. That quick start did not, however, result in continued viewings, and Netflix has not maintained the show despite its popularity.
Romeo and Juliet have been reimagined in the short story First Kill by author V. E. Schwab, which is based on the same short narrative. It centers on Juliette Fairmont, a member of a long-running vampire dynasty who can dwell in Savannah, Georgia, undetected. Nearing her 16th birthday, Juliette, who has survived solely on blood pills, learns that they are no longer as effective as they once were. She is then faced with the possibility of having to commit her first murder, which she does not want to do.
Further complicating matters is Calliope Burns, a new girl in town whom Juliette falls in love with right away. But Calliope’s family background is equally as convoluted as Juliette’s, which is problematic. She was raised by a family of monster hunters as a monster hunter. There is also a great deal of drama, much like with the star-crossed lovers in Shakespeare’s original. The show has a 55 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, which isn’t terrible but isn’t enough to award it a certified fresh grade either.
The critics who did appreciate it couched their appreciation by saying that the drama wasn’t accomplishing anything original, while the negative reviews focused heavily on its awkward writing and general flatness. Shakespeare’s plays have historically been made for rich teen drama source material. Films like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s The Man, and Get Over It all won a place in the hearts of teenage moviegoers with their clever adaptations of The Taming of The Shrew, Twelfth Night, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. However, it is unlikely that First Kill will last as long.
First Kill would have needed to start production in the fall in order to release it in the first half of 2023 if there had been enough demand for it, but that wasn’t the case. It will now be added to the list of Netflix teen dramas that only lasted one season, along with The Society, Chambers, Spinning Out, Grand Army, Tiny Pretty Things, and Zero Chill. The second seasons of Outer Banks, Fate: The Winx Saga, Blood & Water, and Ginny & Georgia are all heading to Netflix in the upcoming months, showing that the streaming service’s executives are still committed to teen drama.
