Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is reportedly testing a new live streaming platform called Super

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is reportedly testing a new live streaming platform called Super

Super, a new live streaming network being tested by Facebook’s parent company Meta, is said to have “similar functionality to Twitch” and is currently only available to a select group of creators and influencers. Facebook Gaming, which has attempted to compete with Twitch and YouTube but has struggled to gain much ground outside of signing reasonably well-known names like Disguised Toast (who has since left after his contract expired) and Warzone star Zack ‘ZLaner’ Lane, already has its own live streaming platform.

Despite this, Meta is developing a brand-new tool called “Super” that will assist creators with going live for their followers, and tests for it are reportedly already underway, according to Business Insider. Super was initially mentioned by Bloomberg in 2020, who described it as a “cameo-inspired tool” akin to FaceTime. However, according to Insider’s most recent report from August 2, it “has evolved into an interactive livestreaming tool, with functionality akin to Twitch.”

Fewer than 100 creators, including tech influencer Andru Edwards and TikTok star Vienna Skye, have evaluated the tool thus far, according to a Meta spokeswoman. A deck has also been given to other influencers to solicit input on the product. It’s unclear exactly what Super’s production will entail for Facebook Gaming’s livestreaming service.

As said, Super would exist independently of other Meta products, such as (likely) Facebook Gaming. The product is positioned more to enable influencers to interact with their fans and “build a platform that enables a digital equivalent of in-person meet and greet encounters.” It also sounds like it would operate more similarly to a TikTok Live sort of product.

They’re constantly seeking ways to optimize monetization options for creators as a new product, something that prospective rival TikTok has previously faced criticism for. At the time this article was written, neither the launch date nor the precise design of Super was known by Meta.
