Netflix will make a sequel to its blockbuster 2020 film Extraction, which comes as no surprise to anyone. Extraction is a thrilling action thriller based on the comic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman (child fighting aside). It’s little surprise that it went on to have Netflix’s biggest launch ever, with an estimated 90 million households watching the film within a month of its release.
Extraction showcases Chris Hemsworth as a fresh new action hero with franchise potential, directed by Sam Hargrave and scripted by Joe Russo. Tyler Rake, a former Australian special forces operator who is now a black-ops mercenary, is played by him. Rake was hired in the first film to retrieve a mafia lord’s kidnapped son. He went above and above the call of duty, risking his life to assure the kidnapped boy’s safety. He didn’t just take a chance with his life; he appeared to be dead.
Rake, like every other good action hero, survives to fight another day. Few information regarding Extraction 2 have been publicly published as of yet, but the original film has already sparked a significant fan base eager to see what happens next. Isn’t there any pressure? In any case, we’ve put together this handy guide with everything we know about Extraction 2 thus far, including trailers, cast information, filming updates, and more. People, get ready to lock and load. Let’s get started!
Extraction 2: Who’s Making the sequel?
Extraction 2 will see Hargrave return as the director. Hargrave made his feature directorial debut with the first Extraction film. He previously stated that he may not direct all future Extraction movies. In January 2021, Hargrave told Collider:
“In terms of my own personal engagement, I’d like to be as involved as possible, but I don’t want to be greedy.” As a fan, I’d be happy to see a lot of different highly brilliant filmmakers that would have really unique perspectives and would add something new and fresh to the brand. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make the second one with the same crew and truly establish the franchise. But, as a film buff, I’d like to see other new directors who can push the action level even farther.”
Extraction 2 will also feature Joe Russo as a writer. The next film will also be produced by AGBO, the production firm founded by Joe and Anthony Russo. According to reports, the AGBO team is working on expanding the Extraction brand beyond the sequel, with the objective of creating a shared cinematic universe akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Take a look at the trailer for Extraction 2
In September 2021, Netflix unveiled a teaser trailer for Extraction 2 during their Tudum event, which you can see above. The video begins with a recap of Rake’s final moments, demonstrating how he was shot and fell into a river. “Tyler, you drown not by falling into the river, but by staying submerged in it,” Mahajan says in a voiceover. Rake then opens his eyes and begins swimming to the surface, against all difficulties.
We’ll have to wait a little longer for a real trailer, but keep an eye on this site for updates in the meanwhile.
What is the release date for Extraction 2?
Extraction 2 has yet to receive a release date from Netflix. They’ve only stated that it will be “coming soon.” Does this imply a year in the year 2022? It’s absolutely a possibility, based on the current filming status, though we’ll have to wait and see if it actually happens.
Who is in the cast of Extraction 2?
Chris Hemsworth is the only confirmed cast member for Extraction 2. They couldn’t have done the sequel without him, after all.
Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and David Harbour are among the cast members of the first film. It’s presently uncertain whether any of these actors, other from Hemsworth, will return for the sequel, but we should hear more soon.
Who Are Extraction’s Main Characters?
Tyler Rake, Chris Hemsworth’s ex-special forces mercenary, is the main character in the Extraction franchise. Because he is the main character, his reappearance was unavoidable. Rake’s growth arc in Extraction was quite enjoyable, so we’ll have to wait and see where he goes from here.
Rudhraksh Jaiswal played Ovi Mahajan Jr. in the first film. He is the son of Ovi Mahajan, a notorious Indian crime boss (played by Pankaj Tripathi). The account of his kidnapping and rescue was called Extraction. He does not appear to be returning for Extraction 2, although anything is conceivable right now.
Ovi Mahajan SrHead .’s of Security, Saju Rav, is played by Randeep Hooda, who, like Rake, comes from a special forces background. He obviously killed in Extraction, but who knows if Rake can recover from being shot and drowned.
Nik Khan, Rake’s handler, was played by Golshifteh Farahani. She was seeking vengeance for Rake’s death the last time we saw her. So it’ll be interesting to see how she reacts when he comes back. It also makes sense for her to be the one who tells Rake about his new purpose, whatever it is.
Gaspar, a former teammate of Rake’s who chose to live in Dhaka, was played by David Harbour. In Extraction, he also turned on Rake and was shot by Ovi, thus if he returns for Extraction 2, there will almost certainly be a flashback.
When will Extraction 2 be released?
Extraction 2 will begin filming in late November, according to Chris Hemsworth’s Instagram. According to his article, the film would most likely begin production on or around November 22, 2021. Filming was set to commence in Australia in September 2021, but was later moved to Prague, Czech Republic. The decision was made, according to reports, in response to the current COVID-19 situation in Australia and fears about potential shutdowns.
Sam Hargrave had previously told Collider that Extraction 2 would be shot in the fall of 2021.
“[That’s] still the case, COVID-pending. That’s kind of everyone’s little caveat right now, but we’re moving forward on it as if we’re shooting in the fall. Joe [Russo] is still finalizing the script. We’re all excited to read it. I’ve read different iterations, but I’m excited to read what he turns in. We’re all looking forward to getting back in the saddle and hopefully bringing another action-packed adventure in the ‘Extraction’ universe.”
If everything goes according to plan, Extraction 2 could be finished in time for a Summer 2022 release. But keep an eye on this space because we’ll be updating it with the most up-to-date filming information as soon as we have it!
When is Extraction 2 going to happen?
Extraction 2 will most likely take up just where the original film left off. However, there has been discussion about delving into Rake’s background.
“We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience,” Joe Russo told Deadline in May 2020. Around the same time, Hargrave also told Collider that he would be interested in making a prequel, though he admitted that the actual movie could go forwards or backward.
Extraction 2 appears to be set primarily in the present, based on what we’ve seen in the trailer. However, there’s a chance we’ll see flashbacks of Rake’s past. After all, the film was set to be shot in Australia, so we might see something from his service in the Australian Army.
What is the plot of Extraction 2?
Honestly? I have no idea. Extraction 2 has yet to receive any storyline details from Netflix, so your guess is as good as ours until then. To be fair, we can make some educated guesses. Aside from explaining how Rake escaped his near-death experience, the new film will also have to allow him to progress to the next stage of his quest. It’s probable that he’ll use this time to reflect on his history, possibly returning to Australia for a more peaceful existence. But, of course, we all know that’s not going to last.
Given the level of interest in Gaspar’s persona, the new plot could have something to do with Rake and Gaspar’s time together as colleagues. Is it possible that an old foe is reappearing to haunt Rake in the present? It’s been done a thousand times, but there’s still room for improvement.
In the end, it’s probably better if we wait and see what Extraction 2 has in store for us. We already know that the sequel will be met with high expectations. And if it’s half as enjoyable as the first, the new film might quickly rise to the top of Netflix’s popularity charts.
