Ex-UFC fighter Phil Baroni arrested for murder of his girlfriend
Mexican authorities have detained Phil Baroni, a former UFC fighter, after the body of his girlfriend was discovered in a hotel room.
The local prosecutor’s office in the state of Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast confirmed late Wednesday that an American had been arrested on January 1; however, they gave little other details.
According to the Mexican newspaper Tribuna de la Baha, on January 1st, State Tourist Police detained Baroni, 46, after he called them for help after his fiancée became unresponsive in their hotel room in San Francisco, Nayarit, also known as San Pancho. You may find San Francisco by travelling north from Puerto Vallarta.
The publication stated that the woman, named only as Paola, was found by police lying naked on a bed with multiple bruises. No indications of life could be seen.
Baroni reportedly told police that he was smoking pot and drinking beer in his hotel room around 3 p.m. when his girlfriend told him she had been cheating on him.
According to the newspaper, Baroni told police that after asking her to take a shower, she refused and he grabbed her and threw her into the shower, where she hit her head and then fell, injuring it twice.
That’s what the authorities say, however. When she said she was cold, Baroni said she asked him to get her cigarettes and alcohol before he helped her onto the bed. The authorities say that after returning to the room with the cigarettes, he climbed into bed with Paola, supposing that she was asleep. He called out to her, but she remained still.
A legal representative for Baroni who could speak on his behalf has not yet been identified.

Paola’s cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is performed. According to Tribuna de la Bahia, the woman’s remains will be returned to her loved ones afterward.
