Ex-Deputy of Livingston Parish receives 100-year term in sex crimes case
Dennis Perkins, a former deputy for Livingston Parish, has pleaded guilty to crimes including rape, child pornography, sexual violence, and video voyeurism. For his crimes, Perkins faces a mandatory life sentence in jail without the possibility of release.
Jeff Landy, the attorney general of Louisiana, has claimed that the plea deal protects the victims from having to relive the traumatic events of the trial.
It was in the best interest of justice and the best interests of the victims to go forward and take this plea, Landry said, adding that he had consulted with the victims and had their consent.
More than 150 felonies were filed against Dennis Perkins and his ex-wife, Cynthia Perkins, a schoolteacher in Livingston Parish. According to Landry, Cynthia Perkins entered a plea of guilty last year and was given a 41-year prison term.
This case has sent shockwaves through Livingston Parish. There was a teacher involved, and a police officer, and they are the kinds of things that send shockwaves through a community, as Landry put it.
For her involvement in the case, Melanie Curtain was given a life term in jail without the chance of release in March of last year.
According to Landry, Dennis Perkins will never be released from prison.
Landry stated,“We have consulted with the Department of Corrections and according to them, and we’ve reviewed all of the statutes, we see no way, absent a governor’s pardon where he could be released early,”
According to reports, Dennis Perkins repented for his actions in front of the court and claimed that Jesus Christ had forgiven him.
