Emilio, the son of former Chelsea footballer Michael Ballack, was killed in a quad-bike accident in Portugal, according to local reports.

According to Portuguese TV channel TVI24, the 18-year-old was involved in an accident in the early hours of Thursday.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to save the teen, but after pulling him from the truck, they were unable to save his life.

The quad-bike was intended for usage on public roads, but more information regarding the tragedy has yet to be published.

Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18.

All our thoughts are with his father Michael and his family at this sad time. 💙

Ballack is most remembered in England for his four-year stint at Chelsea from 2006 to 2010.

He joined the Blues on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, where he was regarded as one of Europe’s top midfielders.

Ballack quit the club in 2010 to rejoin Bayer Leverkusen, but not before helping Carlo Ancelotti win the Premier League and FA Cup with the west London team.

Chelsea responded to the news on Twitter, saying, “Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18.” At this difficult time, our sympathies are with his father Michael and his family.
