Elon Musk in a Twitter debate about gender and pronouns said “I’m not cis”
Highly dependent on the Internet Elon Musk, Twitter’s chief executive officer, made a bombshell announcement on Wednesday: either he is not a cisgender guy or he doesn’t know what cisgender means.
A debate about brainwashing memes quickly veered off into a discussion of preferred pronouns after someone posted an image depicting two antagonistic characters having a conversation about the matter.
Musk tweeted his thoughts on the topic “Yeah, I’m not a fan of pronouns when someone is giving every possible visual cue for he or she, but then still insists on telling you exactly what you expect. I do support pronouns that aren’t completely obvious based on visual cues.”
Author Fred Scharmen responded to Musk’s view by saying “We cis people are explicit about pronouns on top of visual cues in order to help normalise their expression for those who might not be cis. Simple as,” to which Musk volleyed with the baffling response “I’m not cis, you are.”
It’s none of anybody else’s business whether or whether Musk saw this as an occasion to make a bold and oddly timed statement of his gender identity, but the reactions have been a jumble of congrats and confusing follow-up queries.
“So your new pronouns are she/her? We support you, more than you support the child who won’t even talk to you,” remarked Adam Heath.
“You GO, girl! live your truth queen,” tweeted Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator and performer Bill Corbett.
“So you’re trans. Weird way to come out, but good on you,” Tom Coates
From what I can tell after reading through the comments, Musk hasn’t returned to the thread to address the gender assumption that was made about him.
