Here’s the easiest way to get your hands on the White Mask in Elden Ring, and how to use it to make an unstoppable bleed build.
The Surgeon’s Mask, often known as the White Mask of Varre, has quickly risen to fame as one of Elden Ring’s most coveted collectibles. The White Mask is a game-changing item, but getting it isn’t easy.
The mask gives your character the appearance of a heartless killer and boosts the effectiveness of a bleed build, making it a necessary component of any strong bleed build.

Even though it’s meant for use late in the game, the way below will let you get it sooner than expected. If you don’t take care, you can find yourself locked out of this item in the middle of a playthrough.
Elden Ring – How to get the White Mask of Varre
Follow Varre’s questline
The moment you step foot inside the Lands Between proper, you’ll be greeted by Varre. On a ridge overlooking the Tree Sentinel, he’ll tell you to go murder Godrick in Stormveil Castle. You should listen to him, but come back here after Godrick is dead to read a message Varre left for you.
In your next meeting with this creep, you’ll learn more about his purpose and his demigod Master at Rose Church in Liurnia. As an incentive, he’ll hand you three Festering Fingers and suggest that you go on a killing spree against three other players. Because of the high population density in this region, finding a fight should be simple. The good news is that victory is not necessary, as long as the invasion is successful.
Varre will ask you to dip his rag in the blood of a Finger Maiden once you have dueled three other players to death. This can be obtained from either the Chapel of Anticipation or the Church of Inhibition in North Liurnia, or by just killing Irina.
Enter Mogwyn Palace early
After receiving the Pureblood Knights Medal from Varre, you will be invited to join the Mogwyn Dynasty and serve Mohg, The Lord of Blood. You can use this at any time to teleport to Mohg’s den, where the White Mask is kept.
Use it whenever you’re ready to attack Mohg’s lair and go seeking for the mask, despite Varre’s warnings that you should wait for the summons.
Without completing this quest, you can still reach the Mogwyn Palace via a portal in the Consecrated Snowfield, but this happens much later in the game. You can find the White Mask more faster if you follow Varre’s quest.
Finding the White Mask of Varre
After Varre hands you the Pureblood Knights Medal, if you use it to teleport to Mogwyn Palace, he will view this as a betrayal. The Mogwyn Palace and its environs are a challenging part of the game, so proceed with caution. You are highly likely to be underleveled if you are still adventuring in Liunia.
Good news: you can get the White Mask without fighting or killing Varre or Mohg right away; instead, wait until you’re stronger and then do so. Mohg’s lair lies at the very top of Mogwyn Palace, and the entrance to Varre is at the very bottom.
Get invaded by one of the Bloody Surgeons while exploring the lake of blood to unlock the White Mask. One-on-one, these intruders are easy to take down, and they may each drop a White Mask or another piece of the Surgeon’s set.
Take it slow and methodically, picking them off one by one, until you find one that drops a White Mask. You might have to go back to the Grace Site for them to resurrect. You can grab the item and go on with the main quest, returning to Mohg and Varre later if you like.
Using the White Mask of Varre
The White Mask of Varre is required to produce a still absurdly powerful bleed build in Elden Ring. This mask provides mediocre defenses and is attractive since, for 20 seconds, it boosts neighboring bleed damage by 10%.
If your build generates hemorrhage every few hits, this effect will happen again and again, thus making the 10% bleed damage boost permanent. The Lord of Blood’s Exaltation Talisman (which boosts bleed damage by 20%) combined with weapons that cause bleed buildup results in a build that deals a lot of extra damage when bleed is inflicted on the enemy.
Bleed weapons
This is why the White Mask is highly desired by those putting together a Dexterity + Arcane character. When used with the White Mask of Varre, katanas like Rivers of Blood and a bleed-infused Uchigatana, as well as various bleed-focused Ashes of War, can deal devastating damage to your foes.
However, a bleed build and some of the aforementioned items are required for the White Mask to be effective. That’s because you’ll become even deadlier as the impacts of these items combine.
