Doctor Who Season 13: New Year’s Special Release Date & Guest Cast List Revealed
In addition to a teaser image, a description, and a cast list, the BBC has officially confirmed the Doctor Who 2022 New Year’s Day special. The 13th season of the rebooted British sci-fi series, Doctor Who: Flux, is now airing. Actress Jodie Whittaker, who plays the current and thirteenth incarnation of the Time Lord, will leave the programme at the end of the 2022 season.
The cataclysmic Flux event sweeps the universe in Whittaker’s latest season as the Doctor, putting the time traveller Yaz (Mandip Gil) and his new companion Dan (John Bishop) in their most difficult adventure yet. The Doctor must struggle with the Sontarans, Daleks, and Cybermen as well as the Ravagers Swarm (Sam Spruell) and Azure (Rochenda Sandall), who have a mystery connection to the Doctor’s hidden past, putting her on a quest to preserve the world and uncover the truth. After the events of “Village of the Angels,” the Doctor finds himself a prisoner of the Weeping Angels and Division, and the remaining two episodes of Doctor Who: Flux promise to be stressful and nerve-wracking. There are a few new insights about what happens next in the BBC’s New Year’s Day special, provided by the broadcaster today.
This year’s New Year’s Day special will honour the 58th anniversary of the show, the BBC has disclosed, according to Collider. Aisling Bea (This Way Up, Home Sweet Home Alone), Adjani Salmon (Dreaming While Black), and Pauline McGlynn (Dreaming While Black) will appear as special guests (Father Ted, Shameless UK). ELF storage manager Sarah (Bea) and customer Nick (Salmon) will be whisked into an adventure with the Doctor in this episode. In addition, an image of a tarnished and fractured TARDIS was provided as a teaser. The synopsis and teaser image are here:
“Sarah (Aisling Bea) owns and runs ELF storage, and Nick (Adjani Salmon) is a customer who visits his unit every year on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned…”
It has been revealed that Whittaker’s farewell episode of Doctor Who will air in 2022, as part of a special episode to mark the BBC’s 100th anniversary. There will be a special on New Year’s Day, followed by another on Spring Break and Whittaker’s final journey through time and space for her 100th birthday special. Chris Chibnall, the current showrunner, will be replaced by Russell T Davies, the show’s former showrunner, for the 60th anniversary and beyond.
Because of the current season of Doctor Who and the startling cliffhanger of the most recent episode, the 2022 New Year’s Day episode synopsis is understandably ambiguous with no mention of the Doctor. This hasn’t deterred fans from speculating about the special’s enemies, however. Fans now believe that the Daleks will make a reappearance in the New Year’s Day special “Resolution,” following in the footsteps of the precedent set by Chibnall in 2019’s New Year’s Day special “Resolution,” when the iconic monsters will be the antagonists of the seasonal episode. Additionally, the teaser graphic hints at how long the Flux-created TARDIS plotline will continue beyond season 13. Ahead of Whittaker’s departure from the TARDIS, fans are on the lookout for clues about how her journey will conclude.
