Cillian Murphy will play the title role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’
The picture represents Nolan and Murphy’s sixth collaboration.
According to Universal Studios and Syncopy, Christopher Nolan’s next film will be Oppenheimer, on J. Robert Oppenheimer’s role in building the atomic bomb during World War II. Cillian Murphy has been cast in the title character, in addition to confirming that this will be Nolan’s next movie.
“an IMAX-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” according to the film’s description. Oppenheimer will also be written by Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas. It is based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer will begin filming in early 2022 on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. On this project, Nolan will also reunite with several prior collaborators, including producer Charles Roven, Nolan’s Tenet, Dunkirk, and Interstellar photographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, Tenet editor Jennifer Lame, and Tenet composer Ludwig Göransson.
While Murphy has been in several of Nolan’s films, including all three Dark Knight films, Inception, and Dunkirk, he has never played the lead in one. This will also mark Nolan’s return to WWII following Dunkirk, which garnered him his first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
According to the statement, Universal will release Oppenheimer in theatres throughout the world. Following his dissatisfaction with Warner Bros.’ distribution procedures during the epidemic, Nolan has switched to Universal for this current film. “Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas’ films have pushed the limitations of what cinematic narrative can achieve,” said Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. “We are happy to be collaborating with them on this exceptional and outstanding production, and we are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience.”
Oppenheimer will be released in theatres on July 21, 2023.
