Cheryl Burke Reveals That She Had an Abortion When She Was 18
On June 24, the Dancing With the Stars professional revealed in an Instagram video that she had sought an abortion when she was 18 years old and that she was “saddened” by the recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
She said, “If it wasn’t for places like Planned Parenthood, I would be a mother—and I wouldn’t have been a great mother,” My life was in the midst of a major upheaval when I decided to get an abortion.
Burke continued by saying that she was using birth control and engaging in “safe sex” at the time, but that “s—t happens.”
She explained, “I was two weeks pregnant when I got an abortion,” “I remember rolling up to Planned Parenthood with picketers holding anti-abortion signs and that alone was traumatic. And on top of it all, the whole process is traumatic.”
The 38-year-old dancer called the overturn of Roe v. Wade “ridiculous” and “disappointing,” saying, “I wouldn’t be passionately doing what I love to do if it wasn’t for the right to have an abortion.”
“This is absolutely absurd,” she continued. “I wouldn’t be passionately doing what I love to do if it wasn’t for the right to have an abortion.”
Burke is just one of many famous people who have spoken out against the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which was announced a little over a month after a leaked draught opinion indicated that the court was considering doing so.
Taylor Swift expressed her fear in a tweet, writing, “absolutely terrified that this is where we are—that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”
Meanwhile, Keke Palmer wrote, “I’m past disgusted w/ my country and their constant inability to protect one another’s right & keep their word. How u overturning the wrong things? So many things to overturn that make sense. But this is what you chose??”
