Check new ‘Oppenheimer’ Trailer starring Cillian Murphy
When witnessing the first atomic bomb explosion, nuclear physicist and “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer famously proclaimed, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” From the looks of the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s next film, Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy’s character’s detonation could have been catastrophic. American Prometheus, starring Cillian Murphy as the eponymous scientist, is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize–winning book of the same name, which examines the conflict and politics surrounding the creation of the nuclear bomb and the complicated man at its centre.

The preview begins by portraying Oppenheimer as a troubled man whose weaknesses are overlooked due to his brilliance. To his reluctance, he is asked to aid in the end of World War II, and he offers the only possible solution: a nuclear weapon, created covertly in the desert, with enough destructive power to deter anyone from continuing to fight. As he reviews the massive development of the bomb to a foreboding musical score, he imagines a pillar of fire engulfing their enemies and putting an end to the fighting with a single stroke. The only argument against his plan that he hears from higher ups is that there is a non-negligible chance that the detonation will not only wipe out the United States’ enemies, but also the world itself by destroying the atmosphere. As the launch time draws nearer and the catastrophic consequences become more apparent, the music gradually intensifies. Although the trailer teases us with the line “We all know what happened there” as the clock hits zero, Nolan has thus far refused to show us his grand non-CGI bomb detonation.
Nolan assembled what is arguably one of the greatest casts ever on paper in order to do justice to the magnitude of Oppenheimer. Emily Blunt plays the wife of the scientist, and she co-stars with Cillian Murphy. Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr., Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, and Matthias Schweighöfer are just a few of the stars who will be appearing in the film.
