As a remote-first organization, we've built a culture of excellence that transcends borders. We work with talented writers, reporters, and strategists from around the world, offering a flexible and collaborative environment where editorial integrity is the highest priority. Joining The West News means joining a mission to inform, educate, and engage a diverse international readership through compelling digital storytelling.
Role Overview
We are seeking a prolific and insightful Finance Writer to join our business and economics desk. In this role, you will be responsible for translating complex financial data, market movements, and economic policies into engaging, readable content for a broad audience. Whether it's breaking down the latest Fed announcement, analyzing trends in the retail sector, or providing actionable personal finance advice, your voice will be central to how our readers understand their money.
This is a contract-based, 100% remote position. You will report to our Senior Business Editor and collaborate with a global team of editors and SEO strategists. The ideal candidate has a deep fascination with markets, a firm grasp of economic theory, and the ability to write with speed and precision in a digital-first newsroom.
What You'll Do
- Produce 4–6 high-quality articles per week, ranging from 800 to 1,200 words each, covering markets, personal finance, and economic news.
- Monitor global financial markets and economic calendars to identify trending stories and unique angles for our US-focused audience.
- Conduct thorough research using credible financial sources, including SEC filings, Bloomberg terminals, government reports, and expert interviews.
- Pitch original feature ideas and "evergreen" financial guides that help readers navigate budgeting, investing, and retirement planning.
- Adhere to AP Style and The West News' internal editorial guidelines to ensure a consistent, professional brand voice.
- Implement SEO best practices, including keyword optimization and internal linking, to maximize the reach of every piece of content.
- Update and refresh existing high-traffic finance guides to ensure information remains accurate and relevant.
- Participate in async editorial meetings via Slack to discuss upcoming coverage and editorial strategy.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of professional writing experience in the finance or business niche, preferably for a major digital publication.
- A proven portfolio of published work demonstrating your ability to cover complex financial topics for a general audience.
- Excellent command of written English, with an eye for detail and the ability to self-edit for clarity and flow.
- Strong understanding of SEO fundamentals and how to use tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush to inform content creation.
- Experience working with WordPress or similar CMS platforms.
- The ability to meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment while working independently.
- A based-anywhere mindset — we hire worldwide, but you must be able to align your output with a US-focused news cycle.
About The State of Financial Journalism in 2026
The landscape of financial journalism has undergone a radical transformation over the last decade. In 2026, readers are no longer just looking for dry market reports; they are seeking context, transparency, and actionable insights in an increasingly volatile economic environment. The rise of retail investing, the emergence of decentralized finance, and the constant flux of global trade have made financial literacy more critical than ever.
At The West News, we believe that financial journalism should be accessible without being simplistic. We aim to bridge the gap between institutional analysis and the everyday reader's needs. Our coverage is designed to empower individuals to make better financial decisions, whether they are managing a small household budget or an international investment portfolio. The demand for high-quality, independent financial content is surging, and our writers are at the forefront of this movement.
What We Offer
- 100% remote work: Write from the comfort of your home, a cafe, or a co-working space anywhere in the world.
- Flexible hours: We focus on output and quality rather than "clocking in." Manage your own schedule to meet deadlines.
- Competitive USD compensation: Paid monthly via your preferred method (Bank Transfer or PayPal).
- Global Reach: Your byline will be featured on a platform reaching millions of readers across the US and beyond.
- Career Growth: Many of our contract writers have moved into senior editorial or staff roles as we continue to expand.
