Brittney Griner’s Russian detention gets prolonged by a month

Brittney Griner’s pre-trial detention in Russia has been prolonged by a month, her lawyer in Moscow says

Attorney Alexander Boikov said a short hearing was scheduled for Friday, during which the court extended Griner’s custody ahead of a trial on drug possession allegations in mid-June, according to a press release.

Boikov, who described the scheduling uncertainties as “normal,” “It could take longer. It could happen quicker,”.

Russian authorities apprehended Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and star centre for the Phoenix Mercury, in February on suspicion of possessing marijuana-infused vape cartridges in her luggage.

In Russia, Griner had recently come to play in the country’s professional women’s basketball league for UMMC Ekaterinburg.

Ten years in jail is the maximum sentence for drug offences.

According to Boikov, Griner’s demeanour in a Russian prison was “normal”

“She’s been treated OK and has no concerns or complaints about her health. Everything is as OK as it could be,” he asserted.

He pointed out that in March, after Griner, who is 6’9″ tall, complained about the normal accommodations, jail officials had given her a longer bed.

With two other Russian women awaiting trial on drug accusations, she is now housed in a cell.

Boikov went on to say that “The Russians speak some English,” “They’re not friends , they’re not enemies. They support each other as they can.”

By declaring Griner to be “wrongfully detained” earlier this month, the U.S. government shifted its focus from consular matters to the Office of Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs.

The Russian system unlawfully arrested Ms. Griner, as we have noted repeatedly, according to a State Department spokesman. The department had no comment on Friday’s events.

Griner was able to meet with U.S. officials who attended Friday’s session, according to an official. The person went on to say, “She is doing as well as can be expected in these circumstances,”

As Boikov explains, she and her legal team have been in constant contact with American authorities. “Everything they can do, they’re doing,” he adds.

Earlier in the day, Russian media reported that Griner may be included in a prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington.

As part of a prisoner swap deal with Russia, the White House agreed to free U.S. Marine Trevor Reed, who had been sentenced to nine years in a Russian jail on what the United States and Russia both said were spurious allegations.
