Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day wants to ‘renounce’ his U.S. citizenship
After the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which effectively ended the right to abortion in the United States, Billie Joe Armstrong claimed he was ready to leave the country.
The Green Day frontman yelled “F— America” this past weekend while on stage in London. In a nutshell, I am giving up my citizenship right now. “I’m f—ing renouncing my citizenship. I’m f—ing coming here.”
“There’s just too much f—ing stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f—ing excuse for a country,” he declared amid raucous applause. Hella Mega Tour stops included London Stadium on Friday, June 24 with the band performing with Fall Out Boy and Weezer.
“Oh, I’m not kidding,” he added. “You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”
After the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down on Friday, a number of musicians, including Armstrong, have taken their criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court to shows outside of the United States.
Singers including Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, Megan Thee Stallion, and Olivia Rodrigo all made statements to the audience while performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival in England. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh were honoured with a performance of “F— You” by Lily Allen, which was hosted by Rodrigo.
