Audrina Patridge says Justin Timberlake ‘humiliated’ her at VMAs
After helping him accept a Moonman at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, the 37-year-old reality star wrote in her biography Choices: To the Hills and Back Again about the “SexyBack” of the “rude, diva behaviour” singer.
As Patridge reveals in an excerpt of her new book, “We were invited to so many awards shows, and even asked to present a few times,” she adds. “I’ll never forget the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, in particular. Lauren [Conrad], Whitney [Port] and I were onstage to present the award for Male Artist of the Year.”
She mentioned Conrad and Port “were beyond excited when Justin Timberlake won” — beating Akon, Robin Thicke, T.I. and Kanye West — “because they were superfans. His wasn’t my kind of music, so I couldn’t have cared less, but I was excited for them.” However, Timberlake — clearly not a The Hills fan — “wouldn’t even come up to us and accept the award in front of a packed house.”
Timberlake’s longtime collaborator Timbaland appeared onstage and accepted the prize for himself “as we backed off to the side.” (In her book, Patridge incorrectly recalled it being Chris Brown who stepped in. Timberlake mentioned Brown in his speech.)
This “devastated” Conrad and Port, Patridge added; she was “annoyed at his rude, diva behaviour.”
She was enraged by Timberlake’s remarks.
“As if that wasn’t bad enough, Justin took centre stage and said to the crowd: ‘MTV, play more damn videos. We don’t want to see the Simpsons on reality television,” With shows such as Jessica and Ashlee’s and Heidi Montag’s The Hills launching their stars to prominence in 2006, MTV has become one of the most popular networks in the world.
Patridge took his remarks to be a jab at him “Lauren’s jaw dropped,” she said. As a result of this, we felt humiliated.”
For his treatment of Spears and Jackson, Timberlake claimed in 2021 he was “deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right.”
During its existence, MTV’s The Hills was a huge success, thanks to the addition of Kristin Cavallari after Conrad left the show in 2009. New Beginnings, a spin-off of The Hills, debuted in 2019 and was discontinued early this year.
