Android 13: Release date, Supported devices, and Everything you need to know

While Android 12 is still making its way onto supported phones that don’t have the word “Pixel” in their name, we can already try out Android 13, Google’s next big mobile OS upgrade. Android 13 is set to debut in autumn 2022, and it expands on elements introduced in Android 12 (such as Material You) while also providing new features ranging from privacy and security to gaming and battery life. You don’t have to take our word for it now that two versions of the public beta have been released.

When will Android 13 be available?

Android 13 is expected to be released in the autumn of 2022, most likely alongside the Pixel 7 phones, which will be among the first to use the OS. However, early versions of the program are already available. The first official evidence of Android 13 was on February 11th, when Google released the first developer preview build of its next major OS update, followed by a second developer preview in March. The software’s first public beta was released on April 26, a few days ahead of schedule; typically, that release corresponds with Google’s annual I/O 2022 developer conference, which begins on May 11 this year. Between now and the final release of Android 13, we should see at least a couple more public beta versions.

How do I get Android 13 early?

Now that Android 13 is in public beta, testing the software early is quite simple – as long as you have a suitable phone. For the time being, that means a Pixel phone from the Pixel 4 onwards, however, when other manufacturers begin to test their own versions of the new OS, more devices may become eligible.

Which devices will be updated to Android 13?

Owning a recent Google Pixel phone is the safest method to ensure you’ll get Android 13. Every Pixel launched since 2019’s Pixel 4 line has already promised an upgrade to Android 13.

Here’s the list of Pixels already set to receive Android 13:

  • Google Pixel 4
  • Google Pixel 4 XL
  • Google Pixel 4a
  • Google Pixel 4a 5G
  • Google Pixel 5
  • Google Pixel 5a 5G
  • Google Pixel 6
  • Google Pixel 6 Pro

Beyond Google’s Pixel phones, the Android 13 whitelist becomes a little more difficult to decipher – though practically every flagship from the last year or two should get the upgrade at some point. After years of severe fragmentation, many manufacturers (such as Samsung, OnePlus, and Vivo) have begun to make more precise guarantees, matching (or even exceeding) Google’s three-year OS upgrade commitment. Meanwhile, other firms appear to be deciding on a device-by-device basis how many new Android generations their smartphones and tablets will receive.

The easiest method to find out is to contact each manufacturer directly, although our ‘Best Brands for Android Updates’ feature should also provide some insight into which phone manufacturers will be introducing Android 13 to their current lineups.

What is different in Android 13?

The introduction of Material You, a new design language for the Android user experience, was the largest change brought about by Android 12 — at least for Pixel users. Aside from that, the update included a slew of new privacy and security features, as well as useful (and long-overdue) enhancements like scrollable screenshots and even one-handed mode.

While the first developer preview shed some light on what Android 13 has to offer, it’s up to diligent developers and enthusiasts to dig around and unearth potential features and improvements destined for 2022’s big Android release, with the majority of known and expected features consolidated by the likes of Android Police and the team at XDA Developers.
