After the fourth suicide, the vessel in New York may permanently be closed.

The vessel, built by Heatherwick Studio and reopened two months ago with additional suicide prevention measures, was briefly shut again on Thursday afternoon after a 14-year-old kid committed suicide on-site (july 29,2021). The location had closed in January after two suicides in less than a year and a half, and reopened in May without raising the height of the barriers as requested by the local community board and suicide-prevention researchers.

According to a statement given to the daily beast by steven ross, the developer of hudson yards, the 150-foot tall main attraction may never be opened again. The suicide, which was the fourth in a year and a half, infuriated neighbourhood members who had repeatedly requested greater walkway barriers. According to the New York Times, a Heatherwick Studios employee expressed dissatisfaction with the creators’ opposition to higher obstacles. ‘We designed safety barriers for the vessel a while back,’ said the employee, who was not permitted to talk publicly.

In May, after the reopening, new safety measures were implemented, including restricting people to enter with at least one companion and adjusting the free entrance policy to $10 per ticket. Additionally, on-site information discouraging suicide and giving assistance to persons in distress was put, and security personnel were augmented and trained in suicide prevention.

Heatherwick studio said in a statement to the New York Times that it was “distraught” by the news and that the studio and its affiliated company had “explored many methods to increase safety.” The studio had yet to decide on one that would be “possible in terms of engineering and installation,” and those ideas “needed further rigorous tests,” according to the studio.
