Apple has given the tiniest iPad its most significant update to date, providing customers with the power of the iPad in its most portable form.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, acknowledged as much today at the launch event. This, he claims, makes it indispensable for a variety of applications, such as securing it to a pilot’s leg during a flight or a doctor’s lab coat while caring for patients in the emergency room.

Katie McDonald, Apple’s iPad product marketing manager, said the new gadget has received a slew of enhancements and a comprehensive redesign that puts everything Apple fans love about the iPad in the palm of their hands.

The new casing is thin and light, with small borders and rounded corners. It comes in three colours: purple, pink, and grey, and it has a Liquid Retina display.

The new iPad mini is slightly larger than its predecessor, at 8.3 inches, but it still has a small footprint. It has wide colour, True Tone 500 nits of brightness, and the lowest reflection in the industry, according to McDonald.

“Delivering this edge-to-edge screen meant relocating Touch ID,” McDonald explained. “Just like iPad Air, we put it in the top button of iPad Mini.

She said that the iPad Mini is the quickest gadget of its kind, and that the current version’s speed is amazing when compared to the previous generation, with a 40% increase in CPU performance and an 80% increase in GPU performance.

“The neural engine for machine learning applications also takes a big leap forward on the new Mini, increasing performance by up to two times over the previous generation. Combined with the CPU and the GPU, the neural engine enables apps to deliver experiences such as the new Translate app in iPad OS15, which can automatically translate a conversation in real-time.”

The tablet now has a USB C connector, which provides the same capabilities as Apple’s iPad Air and speeds it up to ten times faster than its predecessor.

“The iPad Mini can now connect to a vast ecosystem of USB C accessories, which is ideal for photographers needing to connect to cameras while shooting on location, or doctors conducting ultrasounds in remote areas using the Butterfly app. When people are on the go, having the fastest cellular connectivity is critical.”

This is why Apple added 5G to the iPad Mini, allowing for download speeds of up to 3.5Gbps, according to McDonald.

She claims that users rely on the iPad Mini for FaceTime, taking photos and videos, and experiencing AR when it comes to the canvas and audio. “Both the front and back cameras have been updated. The back camera now has a 12-megapixel sensor with focus pixels and a wider aperture for better shot quality.”

It can also record in 4K, making it a mobile movie studio on the go, according to her. Because of the new ultra-wide camera, it now supports Center Stage, which is a first for the iPad Mini. It also comes with a new stereo speaker system in landscape mode.

During a video call, Center Stage uses machine-learning technology to pan and zoom in a camera’s field of view to get the perfect shot. It can focus on a single subject or zoom out to encompass the entire scene.

Finally, the new iPad Mini supports the Apple Pencil, which magnetically attaches to the device’s side, ensuring that it is always connected, charged, and with the user, effectively turning the iPad Mini into a digital sketchbook.

The new Mini starts at $499 and goes up if 5G is added. It will be available next week.
